The Strong Expansion Project will more than triple the size of Strong Memorial Hospital's Emergency Department, and a nine-story patient tower will add 650,000 square feet of modern space. The project will add beds and care capacity to address the needs of the hospital and community. The anticipated completion date for this project is set for 2027.
“The University of Rochester Medical Center's Strong Memorial Hospital expansion project is not just about bricks and mortar; it's about enhancing the well-being of our neighbors by addressing our community's present and future health care needs. With dedication and precision, we are shaping a legacy of care," said Mike Ziobrowski, Project Executive, Turner Construction Company.
The expansion project will be implemented in phases, adding over 200 examination and treatment areas and patient observation stations to both the Emergency Department and the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP). This combined expansion will increase the current 32,000 square feet to 120,000 square feet.
“Pike is proud to be a part of the team for this project, together with our trade partners and entire upstate New York construction industry. The Strong Expansion Project will have a transformative impact on our community,” said Rufus Judson, Pike CEO.

This project is a historic milestone for the University of Rochester, representing its most substantial capital endeavor to date. A pivotal boost came from the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program grant, contributing $50 million in New York State funding toward this effort. The Strong Expansion Project will establish the largest orthopedics campus in the Northeast, significantly enhancing health care access and services for Rochester and communities throughout the western New York region.
