The new school is one of five core building projects identified in Cranston's five-year facility improvement plan approved by RIDE SBA for Housing Aid State Reimbursement. Once complete, the new Gladstone Elementary — at almost 40,000 square feet larger than the existing school — will accommodate 798 students and include the existing student population from Arlington Elementary.
Gladstone Elementary will provide students with a 21st century learning environment that addresses current educational program requirements for grades K-5 while also meeting or exceeding present sustainability and energy codes. Features include a combination of learning and community engagement areas, such as a cafeteria and a gymnasium with performance space. There are also designated special education classrooms, administration areas, a nurse's office, and food preparation space.
A combination of sub-surface and surface stormwater infiltration systems will be incorporated into the scope, and the project will be NE-CHPS compliant and designed to meet all sustainability requirements.

The existing elementary school will be demolished as part of the project scope. During construction, students will be relocated to a temporary school location in Cranston. Gladstone Elementary is slated for completion by 2025.
